Houston Calling

The holiday week in rock

November 20th, 2006 · 4 Comments

There’s a lot going on this week, besides Thanksgiving. Here’s some of it.

Tonight (Monday, 11.20.06) The Proletariat hosts KTRU DJ Night, featuring Beach House and Over the Atlantic.

On Tuesday, The Hidden Cameras play at The Mink‘s Backroom. This should be a good show.

Also on Tuesday night, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead–whose new CD is great (despite what Pitchfork says)–plays with Blood Brothers, Celebration, and Brothers and Sisters at Warehouse Live.

Wednesday brings a GREAT night of local music, as The Dimes, Something Fierce, and Tzar Bomba take the stage at Walter’s with The Red Leaves from Austin. Be sure to make plans to come out to this show.

Thursday is Thanksgiving. Spend it with your family. Then, once you’re sick of food and them, go to see Skid Row, with King’s X (when’s the last time they played here?), Nashville Pussy, and Mardo at The Engine Room.

Moses Guest plays at The Continental Club on Friday night. Also on Friday, former Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk plays with Cursive at Warehouse Live. Enigk’s new album, World Waits, is great–might make my 2006 favorites list. Zykos and The Cops round out the bill.

Also on Friday, Gym Class Heroes open at 6:30pm for All American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack, and The Format at Reliant Arena.

Saturday is the Santomojo Music Summit, which features Quodia, Moonshine Still, Moving Matter, Moses Guest, Spoonfed Tribe, Drop Trio, Groovin’ Ground, Little Brother Project, Blendt, Grass, Plump, Proteus, A-S-H-S, Free Radicals, & BlaBat at The Meridian. This is going to be an amazing day of music. This is put together by JamHouston.com, which you should check out.

On Sunday, Houston’s own superstars, Blue October, return to Warehouse Live for a sold-out show. Go check out Straylight Run, Matt Pond PA, and Street To Nowhere at Walter’s instead.

Mia Kat Empire (a new label in Houston) is having a showcase at Fuel Saturday night. Good local indie music exists.
Bands include Hollywood Black, The Nautical Mile, Western Civilization, among others.

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead cancelled

No problem. Definitely come check it out though, I do know the bands but I’d probably listen to most of them even if I didn’t. If nothing else make sure to catch a Western Civilization show, they were great when they opened for Tilly two weeks ago.
