Punk rock

October 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Keeping with the recent Spin magazine issue on punk rock, I thought I’d see if I could find Mogwai playing their song. I found a video of Iggy Pop’s talk show rant synched to Mogwai’s “Punk Rock.” Enjoy it here.
Rock fan/chef Anthony Bourdain’s article in the magazine is classic. Here’s a snippet:
Don’t let anybody tell […]

Festival weekend + the week in Houston rock

October 14th, 2007 · No Comments

Now that The Axiom’s 20th anniversary show and the Free Press‘ Westheimer Block Party are nothing more than vague memories, crushed plastic cups in the gutters, and parking lots full of cigarette butts, what’s there to do?
Well, there are a few shows tonight and a lot of decent upcoming shows throughout the month. Here’s a […]

October 13th, 2007 · No Comments

Here are a few things I’ve listened to lately that I suggest you check out. Let me know what you think of them or if you have some albums you’re enjoying that I should be aware of.

Innaway, “Tired Of Waiting”/”D2″ (Prime Directive)
These California psych-rockers wowed me with their 2005 […]

Review: Basement Apartment, Pine Tree Hill

October 11th, 2007 · No Comments

Basement Apartment
Pine Tree Hill
Mpls Ltd
On “Kicking The Can,” perhaps Basement Apartment’s finest work to date, Minneapolis musician Vince Caro evokes the same somber mood as much of Wilco’s recent Sky Blue Sky. The song’s light guitars and orchestration teem with a dedication to summery pop (as did the band’s stellar 2004 release, Transistor!), but Pine […]

The week in Houston rock

October 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Tonight (Wednesday, 10.10.07), singer/songwriter Derek James opens for Matt White at Jet Lounge (next to Engine Room). Locals Prodigal Sons and Lanky are also on the bill. I have James’ latest release, Stray, which reminds me of John Mayer a bit. Lanky & Prodigal Sons are always good. No clue about Matt White.
Also, Something Fierce […]

Review: Grand Ole Party, live @ Warehouse Live, 10.5.07

October 6th, 2007 · 2 Comments

San Diego’s Grand Ole Party was a favorite of mine at this year’s South By Southwest. Other than The Prairie Cartel, Badly Drawn Boy, 120 Days, and Mew, there are not a lot of bands that stuck with me from this year’s SXSW. But Grand Ole Party — a three-piece whose female drummer also takes […]
