Houston Calling

A Day in the Life + the week in music

November 16th, 2003 · No Comments

Visit the newly revamped Swizzle-Stick (www.swizzle-stick.com) for great music news and reviews, including my take on Friday’s concert by NYC’s The Damnwells and Tody and the Falcon in Houston.

Also, I attended the Loud and Clear 2003 charity event last night at Vine Street Studios, sponsored by the Houston chapter of AIGA and 90.1 KPFT. Basically, I paid $30 to drink one lukewarm St. Arnold’s and listen to a band I never would have paid to see (Billy Joe Shaver). I mean, I passed up seeing Travis because it was $20. I passed up Cheap Trick just this past Friday because it was $25. I have passed up numerous shows due to the ticket costs being outrageous and over-inflated. However, it was for a good cause and made the missus very happy. Which is, as everyone knows, most important.

It was a good time, really. We ran into an old friend and his girlfriend, which was nice. Had some good discussions of music. I missed the after-party with the Southern Backtones, but I am sure they put on their usual excellent performance.

Below is a list of bands playing in the Houston area this week:

Tonight!

Punk legends Agent Orange play at Fitz’s with The Hates, The Delayed, and F For Fake

Also, meoWcifer plays at The Proletariat with The Quails, Bonfire Madigan, and Hot Behind You (8:30 p.m. show)

Barenaked Ladies bring their campy Canadian humor to the Verizon Wireless Theater. Enjoy.

I missed them by one night in the late 80’s in Virginia Beach (or somewhere around there), but hope to be able to finally see them at this show. This one came out of nowhere, so that’s great.

This is the show to see tonight: Flametrick Subs with Los Skarnales @ The Continental Club. If you haven’t seen the Subs play before, you don’t know what you’re missing. They offer the best in rockabilly, death, aliens, and cheerleaders. A must-see show.
