Houston Calling

New Houston Calling “feature”: The week in vinyl

March 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Most of the pittance I receive from my various freelance writing/editing usually feeds back into my music habit (February’s thanks go to Houston and Envy magazines). Since Cactus Music has re-opened (!), much of it has been spent on used, (mostly) cheap vinyl. Here’s a haul I recently picked up one evening (for 99 cents each, no less):

Glen Campbell, The Astounding Twelve-String Guitar of Glen Campbell (Couldn’t resist — it has “Puff The Magic Dragon” on it, among other interesting tunes.)
Double, Blue (I always liked “The Captain of Her Heart” for some reason.)
Weather Report, Black Market (Jaco!)
Billy Joel, 52nd Street (“My Life” is a punk song if I’ve ever heard one. Yeah, yeah. Get over it.)
Donald Byrd, Love Byrd

At The Mighty Orq’s in-store late last month, I picked up the following (sadly, none were 99 cents):

Steely Dan, Greatest Hits 1972-1978 (I own the Citizen 4-CD box set with these songs, but this double vinyl was too good to pass up. I recently saw Aja there for 99 cents but didn’t get it so I made up for that mistake with this purchase.)
Squeeze, Singles: 45s and Under
The Style Council, a’ Paris (Some two-song thing for a couple of bucks. Had never seen it so I had to hear it. Someone had crossed out Paul Weller’s face on the label–for shame. Maybe it was the hair…)

I previously wrote about some albums I picked up at the Cactus grand opening in November. Good stuff.

As an aside, it was good to see about 75-100 people out on a Saturday afternoon for The Mighty Orq’s in-store performance. I had two days in a row at Cactus that week–the opening of photographer Steve Harris’ Texas Troubadours exhibit on a Friday night was packed as well.
