Houston Calling

Free Press Summer Fest preview: Something Fierce

May 18th, 2010 · No Comments

Something Fierce is one of Houston’s finest punk bands. For years now, the band–guitarist/vocalist Steven Garcia, bassist/vocalist Niki Sevven, and drummer Andrew Keith–has been playing shows in the Houston area and across the country. Last year, the band released its fantastic second album, There Are No Answers, on Dirtnap Records, and its latest release, the “Where You Goin Man” 7-inch, further explores its punk roots.

Here’s what I wrote about the band for Envy magazine circa 2006:

Punk rock is sort of a misnomer these days.  As a genre, it’s been watered down by the likes of Green Day, Blink 182, Sum 41 and any number of tattooed pretty boys and MTV specials on pop-punk stars’ cribs.  But Houston’s Something Fierce like their punk old-style, and their music is a throwback to punk’s glory days when bands like The Clash, The Ramones and Sex Pistols spat in the collective faces of both the mainstream and the underground.

Here’s a video for Something Fierce’s “Aliens”:

Something Fierce plays at Free Press Summer Fest on Saturday, 6.5.10, at 4:40pm on the KTRU stage.
