Jana Hunter

Normally I ignore a lot of press releases, but this one name-drops so many Houston musicians, I couldn’t resist:

Gnomonsong recording artist Jana Hunter will be undertaking an extensive late Summer tour. She’ll be touring with a full band featuring Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez (guitar, voice) Andy Abelow (drums, voice, alto sax) Geoff Graham (bass guitar, voice) supplementing her own vocals and electric guitar. Her tour kicks off August 14 in Washington DC and currently ends September 22 in Mount Pleasant, SC.There’s No Home was recorded at a friend’s home in Houston, TX, known locally as “Feagan House” over the course of two consecutive weeks in September and October of 2006, produced by Jana and featuring her writing, singing and playing most instruments…There’s No Home and Carrion play extrovert to Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom‘s introvert. Involving community was the focus of the recording process and is what breathed life into these recordings. While Jana played most of the instruments, she was aided and abetted by, among others, her brother, John Hunter (Inoculist and Dethro Skull) playing some bass and singing, John Adams (the Fatal Flying Guilloteens) on drums and Matt Brownlie (Bring Back the Guns) playing a number of instruments.

Some of the songs on these two releases are personal, some are not. “Vultures” is about someone with a literal noose around their neck hoping for a favorable outcome; stylistically it has been described as “jerk chicken.” “Babies” is a pop hit with killer bass featuring Jana on violin. “Sirens” is harmony-heavy, with awesome, awesome Wurlitzer played by Matt Brownlie. “Regardless” is a satisfying study in repetition, with amazing dueling lap-guitars, both played by Will Adams.

Jana Hunter returns to Houston to play DiverseWorks on Wednesday, September 17th. Lesser Gonzalez and Wicked Poseur share the bill.
