Another reminder: DiverseWorks opening this Friday featuring Banhart drawings and Wampler performance art

November 7th, 2007 · 1 Comment

This Friday (11.9.07), from 6-8pm, DiverseWorks presents an art show opening featuring the drawings of musician Devendra Banhart, called Some Drawings.

This event is co-sponsored by Houston Calling — so you better come!

More info:

Known mostly for his catalogue of folk music songs that some have described as “psychedelic,” Devendra Banhart is a Houston-born, San Francisco-based artist and musician whose small, fine-line ink drawings combine strange and sometimes beastly human and animal figures, ornamental framing devices, abstract symbols and bits of language to create oddly charming works that defy definition.

Intimate and hypnotic, Banhart’s works on paper share affinities to Tantric diagrams and Indian narratives, giving rise to fantastic private worlds. Some Drawings will be on view in DiverseWorks’ Project Space from November 9, 2007 – December 15, 2007 with an opening reception THIS FRIDAY (November 9, 2007) from 6-8pm.

Also opening at DiverseWorks that evening will be Claude Wampler’s PERFORMANCE (career ender). Both receptions are free and open to the public. Wampler’s performances are at 8pm and 10pm and tickets will be available at the door.

“Devendra Banhart’s small, fine-grained ink drawings, in tight, doodle-like strokes and flourishes, offer a menagerie of beasts with horned and haloed heads, lots of eyes, and bodies covered with feathers that end in fingers. Echoes of Paul Klee, Indian painting and children’s drawings chime together here. Like the psychedelic-folk music for which Mr. Banhart has become well known, the effect has a spooky sweetness.” —The New York Times

I hope to see you there.
