Music for you to check out

October 13th, 2007 · No Comments

Here are a few things I’ve listened to lately that I suggest you check out. Let me know what you think of them or if you have some albums you’re enjoying that I should be aware of.

In the vein of 75 or Less:

Innaway, “Tired Of Waiting”/”D2″ (Prime Directive)

These California psych-rockers wowed me with their 2005 debut but have been relatively quiet since. The two songs on this 12” are less polished than their full-length (a good thing, actually) and the band seems to relish the opportunity to experiment a bit more than in the past. Hopefully Innaway’s Pink Floyd envy won’t disappear completely by the time their next album is released, but “Tired Of Waiting” seems to be a natural progression.

Matt Pond PA
, Last Light (Altitude)

Despite what Pitchfork says, Last Light isn’t all that bland. In fact, while nothing quite reaches the height of 2005’s Several Arrows Later, the album is full of the same introspection and cleverness that makes MPPA a relatively undiscovered gem. Definitely worth checking out.

Mono, Gone (Temporary Residence)

This release collects the Japanese post-rockers’ singles, and EPs into a beautiful limited edition three-LP set or single CD. It’s all here: the Japan-only Hey,You.EP, The Phoenix Tree EP, a track from a split with like-minded Pelican, and a track from the rare Travels In Constants series. Mono’s delivery is standard quiet-loud-quiet fare, but lush orchestration and self-restraint keep the band one of the genre’s finest.

Let me know what you’ve been listening to lately. Post below or email me.
