Houston Calling

New album by The Cult: Born Into This

September 26th, 2007 · No Comments

As loyal readers of Houston Calling know, I have been a fan of The Cult since a friend introduced me to Love right after it came out in 1985. You can read my take on the album in Splendid (RIP). I recently got a copy of The Cult’s upcoming release, Born Into This, which hits stores on October 8th.

I kind of grew out of The Cult after Electric, but still buy their albums in the hopes that the band will return to the Love-era sound. After frat-tastic rock albums like Sonic Temple and Between Heaven and Hell, I never quite know what to expect (and am usually disappointed overall) but after a couple of listens I can honestly say that Born Into This, while nowhere near the caliber of The Cult’s early music, is a departure from their most recent full-blown rockers.

I recommend ignoring the banality of the album’s first single, “Dirty Litle Rockstar,” and giving the album a chance.
