HoustonSoReal’s take on the music biz, hip hop

September 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

HoustonSoReal’s Matt Sonzala is a well-known figure in the hip hop world and has arguably done more to spread the word about Houston hip hop than anyone. He goes world-wide promoting local artists. Sonzala recently wrote an article for the Houston Press regarding the Ozone magazine music awards, which was recently held in Miami. In it, he goes off about the state of the music business and so-called artists faking their way around the hip hop scene.

In a recent post on HoustonSoReal, Sonzala further explains his reasoning behind the article and understandly has a lot to say. Here’s a snippet:

I mean straight up, if you know like I know, you know who is winning right now. It’s not the MC, or the Producer who’s out there changing the game, bringing new sounds to the table, or “keeping it real.” It’s the dudes who are affiliated with the dudes who have the most money.

These “artists” and “labels” are spending more money on their posters and fake radio spins in imaginary markets than they are on production. They’re copying what they think they are supposed to be doing, and they are selling out the game at all new levels. The major labels are pissing on this music and the independents that want to join their ranks are following like scared little puppies in a rainstorm.

And be sure to tune into Damage Control, Sonzala’s radio show on KPFT 90.1FM, on Wednesday nights (technically Thursday mornings) from midnight-3am.
