After a much-too-long hiatus between albums, Athens-based instrumental rockers Maserati return this month with their new full-length, Inventions For The New Season (on the Temporary Residence Ltd. label). While better known bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky have paved the way for this genre’s accessibility, Maserati’s music takes a more jazz-influenced approach and incorporate a tinge of prog rock into their songs (but not in the stereotypically bad way). Instead of the crescendos associated with most instrumental rock bands’ music, Inventions… seems more musically adept and offers a bit more commercial appeal. Of course, the mainstream will never buy into “post-rock,” but the live setting is where these bands thrive–and this show offers music fans the opportunity to catch two of the genre’s standouts in an intimate setting.

My Education–whose dreamy, shoegazey 5 Popes is a must-have for music aficionados–share the bill. Watching the Austin group play “Nightrider Meets the Waterfall” will be worth the price of admission.

The excellent, Houston-based Sharks and Sailors gets things started.
