Houston Calling

Have you heard Back Door Slam?

June 5th, 2007 · No Comments

A while back, I was the recipient of an earful of buzz about an up-and-coming young band from the Isle of Man. I didn’t really pay the band–Back Door Slam–much attention and as a result missed their show here at Warehouse Live a few weeks ago. Luckily, they played the same venue just a few nights later, to even bigger, well-deserved buzz, and I was there.

Frontman Davy Knowles plays guitar and sings like Eric Clapton, and at times his hands and fingers were moving so quickly they were blurred. Within a few seconds, Back Door Slam won the crowd of 50-75 people over and their mostly original set was nothing less than completely impressive.

No blues band, even a young one, would be complete without a few covers. What impressed me most about Back Door Slam is that they didn’t play to the crowd and go for the obvious blues standards. Their first cover was an old 1930s tune whose name escapes me. Another one was the B.B. King/Clapton collaboration, “Ridin’ With The King.”

Back Door Slam’s debut full-length, Roll Away, hits the U.S. this summer (Amazon has it listed as June 26th). Back Door Slam also have two live EPs and a DVD released in England. I assume they will play Houston again later this year around the time they play ACL in Austin.

Definitely check them out.
