Houston Calling

Lively discussions on Houston music blogs/message boards (or my Sunday in a codeine fog)

March 4th, 2007 · 4 Comments

A couple of brief admissions: I was diagnosed with the flu on Friday afternoon and was fortunate enough to see a doctor that wasn’t stingy with the Robitussin AC, so my weekend’s been a bit of a haze. A good haze…

This will (or should) explain why I spent the last hour or two of my life reading blog posts and message board comments on various Houston indie music sites. Normally I avoid reading these because I completely see how people get sucked in and riled up about the discussions that take place online.

Today though, I am zoning and got wrapped up in something that started out a bash against a local band I like (The Dimes) on The Skyline Network, a site I’ve enjoyed in various forms for some time but don’t visit as often as I should (it’s bookmarked now though), and then I wandered into some bashing of Houston Press music editor John Nova Lomax on the retooled HandsUpHouston message board and a pretty interesting post about hip hop on The Non-Alignment Pact.

A lot of local musicians frequent the HUH message board and these sites. One of them has a particularly interesting response to another poster that starts: “I’m sorry, I don’t know who you are, and if I have met you and enjoyed your company, I’ll apologize now for saying a lot of this: #### YOU, you no-talent piece of shit…” and ends: “You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”

I swear you could get lost in these posts. I hate (no, despise) reality television — and typically shy away from message boards for these very reasons. But I could barely look away.

Spend some quality time online today. Codeine cough syrup highly recommended.

Those discussions are pretty entertaining. Lomax definitely pushes buttons, but I do understand his frustration – the combination of complaining about how no one pays attention to Houston alongside the desire to not wanting to do anything in the mainstream. That can get a little tiring sometimes.

Glad to see the discussion is lively.

I can guarantee you that the Blogs dissing the Dimes has nothing to do their music. Those guys are amazing they just made some really bad choices last week and it came back and bit them in the arse. Other than that we like them a lot.

i’m sure you know that excerpt was from me, and i want to clear any confusion up that it wasn’t directed to john lomax. i just don’t like when a local BAR/VENUE OWNER accuses bands, whom apparently are “friends” with him, of being people that “disgrace the stages of local venues in this town.”

i went a bit far, but i won’t take it back.

Yeah, I saw it was you. Thought it was great — and yes, I saw it was directed toward someone on the board and not Lomax. Sorry if my post made it sound like you were referring to Lomax. My bad there.

I found it funny how you went off on the guy.

    Hope all is well.
