Gil Mantera’s Party Dream + The week in Houston rock

November 13th, 2006 · 1 Comment

I am REALLY looking forward to this Sunday night’s show at The Proletariat (November 19). Gil Mantera’s Party Dream–who are featured in the November issue of Envy magazine–bring their sordid electro-metal-pop back as they open for Grand Buffet. Frank From Accounting, You (Genious), and Ceeplus & The House of Bad Knives round out the bill.

I know it’s a work/school night, but you definitely should check out the Party Dream’s live show. I first saw them in March at SXSW and have been singing their praises ever since. I defy you to watch their set and not have a huge grin on your face and get into the music and onstage antics. Here are some YouTube links (here, here, here, and here) where you can see them for yourself. Also, check them out on MySpace. Enter with an open mind and you will not be disappointed.

Of course, there’s a lot of other stuff going on this week in Houston. Here are some highlights:

Tonight (Monday, 11.13.06), These Arms Are Snakes play with Mouth Of The Architect and The North Atlantic at Walter’s on Washington.

On Tuesday night, I suggest checking out Headlights at The Proletariat with Program. This should be a good show.

Born Liars, whose 2006 release Exit Smiling is great, play at Rudyard’s with Broken Teeth.

On Thursday, Southern Backtones play Cafe Brasil. Casino plays with The Spores and The Prodigal Sons at Rudyard’s.

Friday is Morgue City’s CD release show at Engine Room. Bowel and Slag are also on the bill. Also on Friday night, Satin Hooks play with Pattern Is Movement and Pilot Drift at Rudyard’s. And, Les Georges Leningrad play with In Duches, The Kimonos, and Perkolator at The Proletariat.

On Saturday night, I suggest checking out a rare Mansion gig at The Mink. Lock Arms Block Cemeteries opening up and Antarctica Starts Here open the show. This should be a good one.

Saturday is the Support Local Bands Fest at Super Happy Fun Land. This show features Virgins, Tha Fucking Transmissions, The Low Ends, P. Sims, A Silhouette, Eat Grapes, The Riff Tiffs, Barkus, Sly and the Golden Egg, Hot Air Balloons, Hear You Me, The Downbeats and Lauren Smyth.

Saturday is also the Via Colori, an art event at Heritage Park that will feature chalk artists plus music, including local favorite Sitka Sound.

Also on Saturday, what’s left of The Who play with The Pretenders at Toyota Center. I am not attending on sheer principle, although I am sure it’ll rock regardless.
