Houston Calling

The week in Houston rock

November 1st, 2006 · No Comments

There’s a lot going on in town this week. Tonight, The Ragged Hearts, whose new CD is available now (and is reviewed in the November issue of Envy magazine) play with Prodigal Son at The Continental Club. Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers are also playing.

On Thursday, Southern Backtones’ singer/guitarist Hank Schyma and John Evans (of, uh, John Evans Band) play at Cosmos (Washington Ave. @ Heights Blvd.) with Johnny Falstaff. This should be a good night of music.

Thursday is also the Burden Brothers CD release show at Warehouse Live with Paris Green and Three Fantastic. You can read an older interview with the band at Swizzle-Stick.

If you’re not into rockin’, then come to The Continental Club on Thursday to see singer/songwriter Lee Alexander. It’ll be a good one. His new CD is good. Read John Nova Lomax’s assessment of it in the Houston Press.

On Friday, The Mechanical Boy plays with Another Run, Desolate, Brown vs. Board, and Mooney Monday at Fitzgerald’s.

This Saturday (11.4.06) is the Westheimer Block Party, which features The Generic Tribe, Penny Royal, Stadium, The Medicine Show, Playground, Los Skarnales, Virgins, Million Year Dance, Poison Apple Martini, Honeysuckle, Make Your Own Maps, The Last Starfighter, Natty Turner, Scattered Pages, Standing Souls, Heist at Hand, The Contingency, Nosaprise, Skyblue 72, SinDaddy, Tzar Bomba, Nada Brahma, Mic Skills, Generation Landslide, The Jane Frequency, The Mechanical Boy, Nine Volt, Joe B., Tha Fucking Transmissions, & more. This is held in the usual spots on Westheimer: Helios, Numbers, La Strada, Mango’s. This is a free event that starts at noon and runs until 9pm. Come one, come all. This is a great way to catch a lot of great local bands.

Afterwards, go to Rudz to check out eveyrone’s favorite AC/DC cover band, Bonsfire. No, really. Check them out…
Or, check out Drop Trio with The Morrison Resurrection at The Concert Pub on Richmond Ave.

On Sunday, Social Distortion plays with Blackpool Lights and The Chelsea Smiles at Warehouse Live.
