2006 Houston Press Music Awards results

Spain Colored Orange were the big winners at the 2006 Houston Press Music Awards. The band took home the Local Musician of the Year, Best Indie Rock, Best Keyboardist (Gilbert Alfaro), and Album of the Year (Hopelessly Incapable of Standing in the Way) awards. Congrats!

John Evans (of John Evans Band) took home the Songwriter of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year awards. Lisa Novak won for Best Female Vocalist.

Southern Backtones won for Best Traditional Rock. Fondue Monks (finally) won for Best Funk. The JonBenet won the Best Emo/Post Punk award, and the Best Underground Hip-hop award went to Studemont Project. The award for Best Experimental/Avant-Garde band went to Satin Hooks.

The award for Best Roots Rock/Rockabilly went to The Hollisters. Best Metal went to Sevrin.

The Best Jazz band is Drop Trio, of course, and the Best Alternative Rock award went to LoneStar PornStar.

Million Year Dance won for Best New Act, and Paul “Falcon” Valdez (Tody Castillo Band) deservingly won the Best Drummer award again.

Best World Music/Reggae: D.R.U.M.
Best Salsa/Reggaetón/Latin Pop: Mango Punch
Best Pop: The Handsomes
Best DJ: DJ Red
Best Punk: Poor Dumb Bastards
Best R&B: Brooke Valentine
Best Latin Venue: Azteca’s
Best Blues/R&B Venue: The Big Easy
Best Folk Venue: McGonigel’s Mucky Duck
Best C&W Venue: Blanco’s
Best Rock Venue: Warehouse Live
Best Concert Venue: Warehouse Live

That’s it for the awards this year. I’ll admit I am surprised not to see a couple of names on this list, but what’s done is done. I think a lot of this is how bands rally their fans, and obviously some bands/musicians did a better job of that than others.
