Houston Calling

The week in Houston rock

May 16th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Tonight (Tuesday, 5.16.06), the Southern Backtones play an acoustic gig at Brasil (on Westheimer). This is the last chance to see them before they start their tour of the northeast, so be sure to come out and wish them well.

Also tonight, Violent Femmes play at Numbers with Zykos.

On Wednesday night, Tody Castillo plays at the Chaise Lounge, which is located on Washington Ave. next to Walter’s/across from Mary Jane’s old building. I have heard good things about this place. it will be a nice, small venue to catch live music.

On Thursday night (5.18.06), The Phlegmatics play downstairs at Fitzgeralds. Also on Thursday, Tody Castillo plays at Cafe Brasil.

Friday leaves us with a tough call: to see By the End of Tonight with Buxton, El Paso Hot Button, Baby Calendar, and My Heart Is A Machine at Walter’s or Spain Colored Orange with Lanky and The Kimonos at The Mink? You choose, but at least go see one of these shows — think of it as a favor to yourself. Also, Mary Cutrufello returns to Rudyard’s, which should be packed.

Saturday night is The Dicks’ CD release show at Rudyards with Poor Dumb Bastards and The Squishees. This should be a good one to catch. If you’re not into that, I suggest checking out The Mechanical Boy at Fitzgerald’s with History of Our Presence, The Last Place You Look, Charlize, Another Day, and Stadium.

On Sunday, there’s The Proletariat Picnic, which features O Pioneers!!!, The Letter, Dizzypilot, Jenny Westbury, Letters to Voltron, The Jonx, motion turns it on, S.C.U.M., & Golden Axe.

There’s a great show on Sunday night at Walters: Pelican, Mono, and The Life and Times. Get your tickets at www.superunison.com.
