American Analog Set Houston show + Envy interview

December 8th, 2005 · No Comments

The American Analog Set plays this Saturday night (12.10.05) at Walter’s on Washington. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, here’s a preview of the show I recently wrote for the Press:

Talk about an identity crisis. After a slew of semi-successful, but well-respected, independent releases, The American Analog Set’s Andrew Kenny chose to return to school (Columbia University) for a doctorate degree (in molecular biology, no less). In between lattes and beakers, however, he and the rest of Austin’s AmAnSet — now scattered across the U.S. themselves — managed to record one of the finest albums of their careers, the recently released Set Free. The album maintains the band’s chilled-out indie rock, with Kenny’s overly hushed vocals and self-analyzing lyrics taking center stage. The show is being hailed by some as the band’s “next-to-last show ever” — only Kenny knows for sure — but with side projects, families, and school on the horizon, chances are it will be the last time the band plays Houston for a while.

Also, if you’ve seen the December issue of local magazine Envy, then you’ve undoubtedly seen the interview local singer/songwriter Tody Castillo did with AmAnSet frontman Andrew Kenny. Look for one around town — both Starbucks and Deitrich’s on Montrose near Westheimer should now have the latest issue. Be sure to check it out. Hope you enjoy it.
