Houston Calling

The Dimes, Buckley at Helios, HBC Live 2005 + the weekend in Houston rock

December 2nd, 2005 · No Comments

For all of you rich enough to attend last night Rolling Stones show at Toyota Center, thank you for not running me down while I crossed the street outside the Engine Room after seeing a great night of modern jazz by bassist Rozz Zamorano (new solo album out soon!), Drop Trio (whose latest CD, Cezanne, can be purchased here), and the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (who also have a new album out). Those not attending — and, of course, there were plenty of you who didn’t (it IS Houston, right?!?) — missed out. Hopefully, next time JFJO come to town we will get as good of a line-up and maybe some of you lazy sacks will show up.

Also, I have to say thanks to Ian from Drop Trio for introducing me to local musician Hilary Sloan (Aunt Erma’s Fillin’ Station), one of the most genuine people I’ve talked to in a long time. I can’t wait to see her upcoming live shows and hear her new CD, tentatively sheculed for February. Music writer Joey Guerra at the Houston Chronicle always has good things to say about Sloan and also about her sister’s band, Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers, who play Saturday night at Arbor Gate in Tomball.

On to the shows:

Tonight (Friday, 12.2.05) at Helios (Westheimer near Numbers), The Dimes (you need to see these guys live!) play with Buckley (former members of The Oots, from what I am told — which means they’ll be great), Georgia’s Horse and Aunt Beast. This should be a good show so come out and show your support for the little guys.

If harder rock’s your style, Fitzgerald’s hosts HBC Fest 2005 tonight and Saturday night. A ton of bands are playing, including Rhenium, Lonestar Pornstar, Camino, Faceplant, Prognosis, Melovine, and Chrome 44. More information on this event, which raises money for the Toys For Tots charity, can be found at the HBC website.

On Saturday night, there’s a great show at Rudyard’s — The Yuppie Pricks, The Squishees, and The Jonx.

Also, Casino plays with The Inner Lights (formely the ever-popular The John Sparrow) and the always entertaining Clouseaux at The Proletariat. A great line-up!

Other shows tonight:

ECFA Trio/Last Bastions/Brian Allen @ Super Happy Fun Land
Milemarker/Over Sea, Under Stone @ Southmore House
Blofly/Pong/DJ Jester @ Rudyard’s
Shattered Realm/Hoods/Donnybrook/Black My Heart @ Walter’s on Washington

Other shows Saturday include:

The Jonbenet/The Kidnap Soundtrack/Highwater Waltz/The Phantom Pains/America Is Waiting @ Walter’s on Washington
Stolen Library/The Dimes/Morrow/Aunt Beast/Listen Listen @ Super Happy Fun Land
Children of Bodom/Trivium/Amon Amarth @ The Meridian
Buddy Guy/Jimbo Mathus @ Verizon Wireless Theater
Edward “Kidd” Jordan/William Parker/Alvin Fielder @ The ElDorado Ballroom (2310 Elgin)
The Turtles/Flo & Eddie @ Stafford Centre (Stafford)

On Sunday night, my favorite local punk band, Gun Crazy, plays with The Birthday Suits at Rudyards.
