My Morning Jacket cancelled, other Houston shows

November 19th, 2005 · No Comments

NOTE: Tonight’s scheduled My Morning Jacket performance at The Meridian is cancelled. According to the band’s website, there is no plan for a rescheduled date. Were ticket sales poor? The site doesn’t give an explanation.

So, why not come out and see a local band instead?

Tonight at Helios, you can attend The First Annual Discount Halloween Show, featuring Poison Apple Martini, Ginnicide, and The Black Math Experiment (see my recent review of their 2005 EP here).

Also tonight, Houston favorite Tody Castillo plays at The Harp (on Richmond near Shepherd). Castillo’s music is now being featured on woxy.com‘s unsigned@woxy.com program and associated podcasts. If you’re in a local band, you should send your CD to woxy today. It’s a great way to get national exposure. Locals Southern Backtones and John Evans Band have both been featured. Local musician Arthur Yoria (who has a new EP out) has bee on woxy.com for years.

Fallcore is at Fitz’s tonight. The line-up includes: Will to Live / Die Young / The Jonbenet / Your Mistake / The Kidnap Soundtrack / Ten Crowns / Iron Age / My Luck / HoldxFast / Golden Age / Grave Robbers / Balls Out / Bitter End / Knuckle Scraper / Five Families / Insect Warfare. A portion of the proceeds from this show will go toward the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. $10 cover.

At Fitzgerald’s, beginning at 3 p.m., KPFT’s Joe’s Roadhouse features Mississippi John Hunt (not the corpse of Mississippi John Hurt as previously reported), Kern Pratt, and Michael Haaga‘s Plus and Minus Show. This should be excellent. if you can’t make it, listen in on the radio (90.1 FM).

Heavy metal maniacs Arch Enemy bring their current world tour to The Engine Room.

Rockers My Own I play in Galveston at The Balinese Room. My Own I’s debut album is reportedly complete and should be available at shows and local stores next month. Stayed tuned for more information.

Ex-Models, Nervous Exits, Rua Minx, and Cockroach Cockroach play at The Proletariat tonight.

Super Happy Fun Land plays host to Architect, Lions In Paris, Simply Joe, Flying Fortress, Video Screams, and Mr. Electric. Enjoy.

Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers play out at Bareback Bar & Icehouse in Spring. Lisa Novak, LL Cooper, and Lee Alexander play Rudyards.

At the Southmore House, there’s the 2nd Annual Houston Comix and Zine Festival Party, which starts at 6 p.m. Hey Cliff, I met you at Southmore House this past Wednesday night and we chatted about a lot of bands. Email me.

And, of course, Sir Paul McCartney plays a sold-out show at Toyota Center. I am sure tickets are available today through scalpers and ticket brokers. Oh wait, aren’t those the same thing?!?

Tomorrow night at Number’s, there’s a rare chance to catch The English Beat with Los Skarnales. No, really. This will be great.

As always — if I missed your band, let me know.

See you out and about.

Now Playing: dead silence
