Houston Calling

The weekend in Houston rock

October 1st, 2005 · No Comments

Tonight (Saturday, 10.1.05), catch Pale at The Proletariat for a paltry $3 or so.

The Bellrays and The Bareknuckle Knockouts play at Rudyard’s.

Fat Cat’s hosts Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Despised Icon, Aborted, and Braced for Nails, while Reliant Stadium gets countrified with George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, and Martina McBride. Nearby, the Reliant Arena hosts Ricardo Montaner/Cristian Castro/Gilberto Santana Rosa.

The Sidekick, The Mysterious H?, and Panda 84 play Super Happy Fun Land. LoneStar Pornstar, Sevrin, Full Service, Truck, and Copious play out at Forgetta ’bout It (Jones Rd. @ grant Rd. in NW Houston). I recently saw an ad for Stryper on their door so be sure to check that out.

Savage Evolution plays at The Beach House in Webster.

On Sunday night, be sure to check out Houston’s own Sharks and Sailors as they play with Mono and Belini at The proletariat. This will be a good night of slow, instrumental rock interspersed with ear-splitting walls of noise.

Santana plays The Woodlands with Robert Randolph & The Family Band. The Unseen, A Global Threat, Career Soldiers, and Johnny Switchblade and the Blackouts play The Meridian. Bent Gents, Los de Verdad, and Ese play Super Happy Fun Land.

On Monday, there are two great shows to check out:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC) with Mark Gardener at The Meridian, and Two Gallants with Holy Ghost Revival at Walter’s on Washington. Read my interview with BRMC’s Peter Hayes here.

Advance warning: next Saturday (October 8th), there is a lot going on. The Warlocks play with Gris Gris at Walter’s. Unfortunately, this is the same night that local indie favs Bring Back The Guns play at The Proletariat and up & coming Houston rockers The Dimes play Super Happy Fun Land.

It’s also the same night as the big Bringing Back The Big Easy Hurricane Katrina Relief Event at The Meridian. This shows will feature a lot of New Orleans and Houston acts, including The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rockin’ Dopsie, Wild Magnolias, Ya Ya Sol, The U of H Marching Band, Arthur Yoria, The Aqua Velva, Liviya Compean, Grand Texas, Lady D and the Zydeco Tornadoes, Electric Frankenstein, The Living Dolls, Gang of Creeps, Tattered Thieves, Something Fierce, The Phlegmatics, and much more. Be sure to come out, see great bands, and help a great cause.

See you out and about.
