Houston Calling

New Orleans musicians play Houston clubs

September 7th, 2005 · No Comments

Starting this Thursday (9.8.05) and Sunday at 5 p.m. Sammy’s at 2016 Main will have live music from New Orleans musicians and their friends. As an ongoing effort to help out victims of the recent hurricane, Sammy’s will continue to only feature New Orleans musicians on Thursday and Sunday. Sammy will continue to perform on Friday and Saturday nights.

Here are some bands that will perform at Sammy’s:

Rebirth Brass Band — is simply a New Orleans institution. Rebirth is still touring and we hope to have members participate while the band finds it way to Houston later this month.

New Birth Brass Band — fuses hip-hop, Mardi Gras, Indian chants, funk, and modern jazz with age old traditional sounds.

Little Rascals Brass Band — in the same vein as Rebirth.

Kermit Ruffins — this trumpeter combines the spirit of classic New Orleans music with the energy and creativity of the modern Crescent City sound. Kermit is confirmed for Thursday and Sunday.

Bryson Neville — a cousin of the Neville Brothers

All of the proceeds from the door will go to the New Orleans musicians directly with a portion being given to NOAHLeans. NOAHLeans is a non profit whose mission is to help musicians and their families find employment and relocation aid throughout the United States. Through their website, they are creating databases of instruments that musicians need and another database of people who have instruments to donate. Please look at their website and help if you can. If you are a NoLa musician, please contact them so they can help.

Sammy’s is located — where else? — at 2016 Main (in the 2016 Main high-rise building across from McDonald’s in the former Sidelines space). Valet parking is available on Gray Street. Cover is a suggested contribution of $20, minimum cover is $5.
