Houston Calling

The week in Houston rock

January 11th, 2005 · No Comments

On Wednesday night, 1.12.05, Jimmy Eat World returns to Houston for a show at Number’s. These guys put on a great live show, and I am sure it’s sold out.

This Saturday night, 1.15.05, Pale is playing a FREE SHOW at The Proletariat as part of Commune Music. Arthur Yoria is also playing with a full band. Doors are at 9 p.m.

In other Pale news, during the 94.5 The Buzz’s “All Request Tsunami Relief Show” last Friday, they apparently played Pale’s single “My Wonderful Life” a couple of times. Give the station a call at 713.212.5829 and request this song to help out the band.

In other tsunami relief news, the musicians in Space City Gamelan are doing two tsunami relief benefits–one at the Indonesian consulate on 1.22.05, and another at Barnevelder Arts Movement Complex on 1.23.05. Be sure to come out and show your support of local music while helping out a worthy cause.

Advance warning: On Tuesday night, 1.18.05, there’s a full night of experimental jazzy music at Rhythm Room (1815 Washington Ave.) with The Dead Kenny Gs, featuring Mike Dillon, Brian Haas and Skerik. The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey will follow. This is one not to miss. Also a non-smoking show. Check the venue’s website for more information on shows.

Also, Earlimart and Pedro the Lion are playing at Mary Jane’s/Fat Cat’s on 1.23.05. This is an early show (doors at 2 p.m., show at 3 p.m.) Check their website for more information. The Arcade Fire is that night. More information on these shows can also be found on the SuperUnison website.

I attended the Sound Theory CD release show last Saturday. The Oots and 61 Cygni opened the show, and all three bands were great. The Oots are definitely a band to keep your eyes on this year — an incredible, energetic display. 61 Cygni played a new song, a My Bloody Valentine-meets-Explosions in the Sky-esque powerhouse. It was the perfect way for them to open their set. Sound Theory, celebrating their new CD, Frequency, were at their best. All in all, a great night of local music. You should have been there.
