Houston Calling

Drop trou? No, Drop Trio (sorry)

Houston’s best jazz combo, Drop Trio, is playing this Saturday night, with Dubtex, at the Dubtex warehouse (1211 Hutchins @ Polk). This will be a great show. Drop Trio are an amazing three-piece who make some great music together. They recently released their CD, Big Dipper, which is available at shows or on the band’s website. I picked it up at Cactus Music at their CD release show and have been spinning it since. It’s a great album, kind of reminiscent of Medeski, Martin, and Wood, but they don’t come off as a ripoff. Their live show is a mixture of improv, covers, and their own songs. Definitely not to be missed.

Drip Trio’s Ian Varley (see his blog here) recently informed me about a new group starting called the Houston Music Foundation (see website). Here’s what he had to say about HMF:

“…It’s a group intended to promote and advance local music in Houston. It’s run by Kenny Haner, the guy behind the Houston Music Hour (a public access TV show that shows videos of local bands). They’re holding their first public fundraiser / awareness / networking event at the Engine Room on Sunday, October 26th…I’ve met the people working on it, and they’re good people, I think there’s a lot of potential to improve the state of music in Houston.”

That sounds like a great idea to me. Definitely needed. More info as I get it.

Hands Up Houston continues to do a great job of bringing bands to town and getting local bands on the bills.

Also on Saturday evening, the Southern Backtones will play at Continental Club.

Plan to see upcoming interviews with lemonenemy and Pale.
